# Why we ask you not to email tax documents

October 1, 2026

If you work with us, you will hear us ask you not to email your tax documents. It can feel like an extra step, so here is the reason behind it.

## What is in a tax document

A W-2, a bank statement or a copy of last year's return carries your Social Security number, your income and your account numbers. Those are the details someone would need to file a return in your name or open an account you never asked for.

## Why email is the wrong place for them

Email is convenient, but it was built for messages rather than private files. A message can pass through several servers on its way to us, stay in both inboxes for years, and be forwarded without anyone meaning to. A typo in an address can send it to the wrong person.

## What we use instead

We use a secure client portal. When we start working together, we send you an invitation. You sign in, upload your documents when it suits you, and pick up your finished return in the same place. Everything for your file stays together, so nothing has to be dug out of an inbox.

## What still goes by email or phone

Questions, appointment times, reminders and a note to say a document is missing all go by email or phone as usual. The rule covers the documents and the numbers in them, not the conversation.

## If you have already emailed something

Let us know. Delete the message from your sent folder, and we will take it from there.

You can read more about [how the client portal works](https://staging.mebtax.com/client-portal), or call us at 914-556-6860 and we will walk you through it.
